How to install bootloader themes for your Hackintosh

While the default bootscreen that’s installed by Multibeast doesn’t look bad, it could definitely be better. Luckily, Chimera (the bootloader that’s installed by Easybeast and UserDSDT) has a theming feature built-in, so that you can download custom themes to make your bootscreen just a little more interesting every time you boot up your Hackintosh. Chameleon, the bootloader that Chimera is based off, supports themes as well. Jump past the break to learn how to download and install Chimera themes.

 

To give you an idea of the possibilities, this is the theme that I’m using right now (LoginToLion):

 

Yes, that’s what I see every time I boot my Hackintosh. Not bad, right? Follow these steps to install this bootloader theme yourself:

1. Download a desired theme. Unfortunately, there’s not just one big repository for all bootloader themes, but the tonymacx86 Customization forum has a few, as does the Theme Park section of the official forums for Chameleon bootloader (which Chimera is based off).

2. Unzip the theme (almost all themes are downloaded as a zip file). Open theme.plist in the theme folder with TextEdit, and change the parameters under “screen_width” and “screen_height” to whatever your monitor resolution is.

3. Go to /Extra and open the plist file org.Chameleon.boot.plist. Between <dict> and </dict> in the file, add the following lines.

Replace 1920 and 1080 with the width and height of your monitor, respectively. Then save the file. In Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you won’t be able to save the file normally because it’s a locked system file (in Lion, you can unlock system files). Instead, save a new copy of org.Chameleon.boot.plist to somewhere random (make sure that you save it as a .plist file). Then delete the old copy of the file and replace it with the new one.

Editing theme.plist and org.Chameleon.boot.plist will make Chimera attempt to run at your given resolution. However, Chimera can only display resolutions that are programmed into your graphics card (these are called VESA resolutions). For example, my graphics card can only display the following VESA resolutions at the Chimera bootscreen: 1024×768, 1440×900, and 1680×1050. Nevertheless, you should still edit theme.plist to your desired resolution. Chimera should display whichever one of these resolutions is closest to the width and height that you entered. If you have a widescreen monitor but your graphics card doesn’t have any widescreen VESA resolutions, check out my workaround method.

4. Copy the theme folder into /Extra/Themes in your main hard drive. In /Extra/Themes, you’ll also see the folder for the Default theme. If you want to be really thorough, just delete that folder and rename the new theme folder “Default”. If you want to apply your theme with less of a brute force method, check out Step 3.

5. Go to /Extra and open the file org.Chameleon.boot.plist. Add the following line between <dict> and </dict> in the file:

Obviously, replace “theme name” with the name of the folder that contains the new theme in /Extra/Themes.

Reboot, and enjoy the new look.

8 Ways to Lose Weight with Little Effort

1. Eat small meals throughout the day.

This simple food-timing trick sends messages to your brain to release fat stores. If you haven’t eaten anything for 2 to 3 hours, it’s time to eat again. Ideally, choose some protein and nonstarchy vegetables to get the best results. Some great options include: soaked almonds (soak for 8 hours or overnight, then drain), celery sticks with almond or hemp seed butter, and apple slices with avocado or almond butter.

2. Switch to coconut oil.

It’s a great substitute for butter, margarine, and most cooking oils. It also has more health benefits and stimulates the thyroid while lowering cholesterol levels.

3. Eliminate the Candida albicans yeast in your intestines to help shed weight.

Yeast overgrowth is linked to an average weight gain of 32.5 pounds. Shocking but true! And the incidence of candidiasis—the condition of Candida overgrowth—is surprisingly common. Getting to the bottom of this infection can help you lose weight. Candidiasis is linked to weight gain in several ways:

  • It can interfere with absorption of many critical nutrients needed for detoxification and fat metabolism.
  • It triggers intense cravings, particularly for carbohydrates that candida organisms need to live and that allow them to multiply further.
  • It interferes with the normal functioning of the thyroid, which reduces the body’s ability to convert fat and food into energy needed for cellular functions.
  • It causes belly bloating due to the fermentation of carbs and toxic by-products of candida in the intestines.

The best way to eliminate a candida infection is to: cut out sugars (even natural ones and fruit) at least for a few weeks to a month. Add a probiotic supplement to restore healthy bacterial balance. Use herbs like artemisia, burdock root, and garlic (follow package instructions). Snack on fresh pumpkin seeds, cooked with coconut oil, and try to eat at least one clove of fresh garlic daily.

4. Resistance training, like weight lifting, results in a 73% increase in fat burning for hours afterward.

Okay, I know this one requires a bit more effort. But just adding 15 to 20 minutes of resistance training like lifting weights results in a 73 percent increase in fat burning for hours after you finish, according to research at the University of Nevada. Even lifting 5-pound weights or canned goods helps you to get this impressive result and develop great muscle tone, which in turn burns fat.

5. Snack on almonds to increase weight loss by 64 percent and target belly fat.

According to research at California’s City of Hope National Medical Center and a study published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders, overweight participants who snacked on 70 almonds daily had a 14 percent waistline reduction.

6. Drink green tea. It’s a fat buster extraordinaire.

Study after study proves that drinking green tea dramatically reduces weight thanks to the phytonutrient epigallocatechin gallate (or EGCG for short). EGCG has been proven in multiple studies to increase the rate at which fat is burned in the body. Research at Tufts University indicates that EGCG in green tea, like other catechins, activates fat-burning genes in the abdomen to speed weight loss by 77 percent. Drink at least three cups daily for weight loss.

7. Shrink fat cells with chromium.

Research at the University of Texas found that supplementing with the mineral chromium daily can double fat loss, without losing muscle.

8. Take carnitine to burn fat fast.

Carnitine is a powerful nutrient that transports fat to your cells’ incinerators to be burnt as fuel. In a study of people who ate healthy, exercised moderately and supplemented with 2 grams of carnitine daily, those who supplemented with carnitine lost an average of 11 pounds, while the placebo group lost only 1 pound in 12 weeks. Best results are obtained with 2000 mg or 2 grams daily on an empty stomach, ideally before breakfast.

Accessing hosts file on Mac OSX

I just put this together to cover a question I was asked recently. Might be useful to someone…
Where is the /etc/hosts file in Mac OS X?

The hosts file used by Mac OS X is in /etc/. Windows users sometimes have problems finding it since there’s no %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc folder in the Mac OS. UNIX users might not expect /etc/ to be hidden by the Mac OS X Finder, so they often look in /Library/Application Support/
Accessing /etc/hosts

/etc/ is hidden by default. The easiest way of getting to the hosts file is to open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app. Then type:
sudo nano /etc/hosts

…you will need to type in your password. Your hots file will open in the text editor ‘nano.’
Adding entries to /etc/hosts

On a new line type the IP Address followed by at least one space or tab and then the hostname. Examples:
127.0.0.1 mydevsite.local
192.168.1.222 ads.shadycompany.biz

…hit ctrl + o to Save, and then ctrl + x to quit the text editor.

iPad iPhone Laptop Wi-Fi Radiation and Magnetic Fields

A lot of people think that if the devices are not “connected” to Wi-Fi and are just on standby mode, there will be no radiation. The measurements showed that this is not true. -Phone will be in direct contact with the ear and head (unless handsfree or headset are used).
-Wi-Fi was turned off on this phone.

-Continual signals. Stop and spike every few seconds, from 0 to 50-70 μW/cm2 every few seconds.

-iPad will be in direct contact with the student’s hands or/and lap/abdomen.
-Note that there is no Wi-Fi network available. The iPad is not even logged onto any Wi-Fi network nor downloading anything.

Health Canada’s exposure limit is at an extremely high level of 1000 μW/cm2. China/Russia/Italy/Poland have exposure limits at 10 μW/cm2.

Switzerland’s general limit is 9.5 μW/cm2 and 4.25 for sensitive areas (children, elderly, medically-challenged).

The Swiss doctors’ group – Physicians for the Environment – recently issued a public statement calling for reduction of their limit by 10 times, i.e. to 0.95 μW/cm2. Luxembourg/Bulgaria at 2.4 μW/cm2. Salzburg Health Department in Austria recommends only 0.001 μW/cm2 for outdoor and 0.0001 for indoor exposure. Look at the top line of the Tri-Field Meter, it shows that the magnetic fields of the iPad2 was at 15-20 milligauss even with Wi-Fi turned off and the unit is on Airplane Mode (no cellphone reception/connection). The “safe” level of magnetic fields is below 3 milligauss (the dotted line). If you allow your child to use the iPad for games, reading or typing, DO NOT let them put the iPad on their laps or in their hands, put it on the table instead!

How about calling on an iPhone (or any cellphone)? Absoultely NOT for kids, unless it’s an emergency. The European Union has been warning against cellphone and Wi-Fi for the public for a few years, especially CHILDREN, BABIES, PREGNANT WOMEN, YOUTH AND MEDICALLY COMPROMISED ADULTS.

How about texting for kids? Not recommended. However, texting is better than talking on the phone. Just remember that everytime a text message is sent out, a burst of radiating frequency is set off. With that in mind, you might not want your children to be in the habit of texting frequently. When they (or you) do text, better not keep the device close to the head/brain or even the body when you hit “send”. Leave some distance.

11 Ways to Protect Against Cell Phone Radiation

Ninety-one percent of Americans and nearly 5 billion people worldwide use a cell phone. Increasingly, cell phones are becoming a vital part of our lives, functioning as our primary mode of personal and business communication as well as our calendars, cameras, MP3 players, and address books. It is hard to imagine a world where we didn’t have all these functionalities at our fingertips. But at what cost to our health?

Green America decided to tackle the subject “Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?”

We fully expected to turn up some inconclusive evidence that excessive cell phone use may be linked to some ill health effects, and people should be careful about talking on a cell for hours a day—but when we dug into the research, what we found was truly frightening.

Shortly after we published this issue, the World Health Organization declared cell phone radiation a “possible carcinogenic,” putting it into the same category as lead and the dry cleaning chemical perchloroethylene.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself from potential harm from radio-frequency radiation emitted by these devices:

1. ALWAYS USE A HANDS-FREE HEADSET OR THE SPEAKERPHONE SETTING WHEN TALKING ON YOUR CELL PHONE. Some researchers say a wired headset, especially a “hollow tube” headset you can special-order—which will be labeled as such and uses hollow tubes rather than wires to conduct sound—is the best. But even a Bluetooth wireless headset will reduce your radio-frequency radiation exposure by several thousandfold.

2. KEEP THE PHONE OFF YOUR BODY. Carry your phone in a purse or bag with the antenna (back of the phone) pointed away from you, not in your pocket or bra. When you’re talking on it (with a headset or on speakerphone) put it on a table in front of you. Just a few inches can substantially reduce your radiation exposure.

3. TEXT INSTEAD OF TALKING. Holding your cell phone away from your head to send text messages exposes you to less radiation than talking on it without a headset.

4. TURN IT OFF. Phones only emit radio-frequency radiation when they’re searching for or receiving a signal, so a phone that’s off or in “airplane mode” is safe.

5. REPLACE CORDLESS PHONES WITH CORDED MODELS. Cordless phones can emit as much radiation as cell phones, and the charging station constantly emits radiation.

6. USE A LOW-RADIATION CELL PHONE. Cell phone retailers aren’t required to display the specific absorbency rate (SAR), or the amount of radiation a phone causes your body to absorb. Search FCC.gov/cgb/sar to find out the SAR level of your model, or consult the Environmental Working Group’s online database: EWG.org/cellphones. But no matter how low the SAR of your phone is, it’s still important the phone away from your head and body whenever possible.

7. KEEP YOUR CELL PHONE, CORDLESS PHONE, AND WIRELESS MODEM AWAY FROM YOUR HEAD. All three will expose you to radio-frequency radiation, so banish all three from the bedroom or, at least, keep them away from your head and body. If you must have wireless Internet, turn off your router when you’re not using it, especially at night—a power strip with a timer can help.

8. KEEP YOUR PHONE FULLY CHARGED. When a cell phone’s signal strength is weak or blocked, it has to work harder—and consequently emits more radiation.

9. BE WARY OF DEVICES THAT CLAIM TO BLOCK EMF EXPOSURE. A Google search yielded 236,000 results for “EMF protection,” most of which were sites selling “protective” devices ranging from pendants and crystals to microchips and herbal remedies. Most experts agree that many are based on quasi-science and there’s no evidence that they work. Some “EMF shields” for your phone can actually increase the amount of radiation that it emits, since they block the signal and the phone has to work harder.

10. DON’T GIVE CELL PHONES TO YOUNG CHILDREN AS TOYS OR PACIFIERS. If you occasionally let your small tot play Pac-Man on your cell phone, put it into “airplane mode” so it won’t search for a signal—which means it won’t emit radiation.

11. TAKE CARE WITH OLDER CHILDREN. Children are more susceptible to potential harm from radio-frequency radiation than adults. If you give your children a cell phone for safety reasons, also give them a headset and encourage them to text or use the speakerphone instead of putting the phone close to their heads.
