Animated episodes that never aired, which take swipes at black cable network executives, will be included on next Tuesday’s DVD release.
By Greg Braxton, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
The battle between “The Boondocks” creator Aaron McGruder and Black Entertainment Television is about to get a lot more animated.
Two second-season episodes of the biting cartoon series that attack the black-themed network but were never aired — possibly because of corporate pressure — are slated for DVD release Tuesday. The pair of shows take aim at BET’s top executives and lampoon what it views as the cable network’s harmful negative imagery and stereotypes that work as a “destructive” force within African American culture.
The episodes amplify a familiar chord struck by McGruder, who has regularly targeted BET, first in his politically and culturally charged comic strip, published in more than 300 newspapers, and subsequently in the TV adaptation on Cartoon Network’s edgy late-night Adult Swim.
But these particular installments, which like many in the animated series feature violence, foul language and frequent use of the N-word, apparently went too far in mocking BET’s top brass. In “The Hunger Strike,” a main character refuses to eat until BET is off the air and its executives commit hara-kiri.
And in “The Uncle Ruckus Reality Show,” a foul-mouthed black man who hates African Americans gets a show on BET. The hot-button series centers on two young black boys, militant Huey Freeman and his gangsta-wannabe younger brother, Riley, who live in the suburbs with their grandfather.
When BET executives learned of the shows, they complained to Turner-owned Cartoon Networks and Sony Pictures Television, which produces “The Boondocks,” and urged that they be blocked from broadcast, according to sources close to the program who requested anonymity for fear of network reprisal.
Initially, Cartoon Network resisted, but when legal action was threatened, the episodes, written by McGruder and co-executive producer Rodney Barnes, were yanked, according to sources. Both McGruder and Barnes declined to comment.
Executives at Turner and Viacom-owned BET, however, deny there were any discussions about removing the programs between the two companies. Still, Turner officials would not explain why the two installments were eventually withheld.
Both episodes are highlighted by fierce satirical attacks on two top BET executives, portrayed in thinly disguised caricatures.
Chairman and Chief Executive Debra L. Lee, who succeeded the network’s founder, Robert Johnson, is shown as Debra Leevil, patterned after “Dr. Evil” in the “Austin Powers” films. Leevil declares in a staff meeting: “Our leader Bob Johnson had a dream, a dream that would accomplish what hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and malt liquor could not accomplish — the destruction of black people.”
And BET President of Entertainment Reginald Hudlin is depicted as Wedgie Rudlin, a culturally insensitive buffoon coasting on his Ivy League education. Hudlin, a former friend of McGruder, is ironically credited as an executive producer on the series, the end result of a professional partnership that ended bitterly over creative differences before the series premiered in 2005.
A BET spokesperson said that the network was aware of the episodes and did not, as a network that runs its own satirical content, begrudge those who made fun of its programming.
The DVD release features stinging commentary from McGruder and Barnes about the episodes, which are uncut. In the introduction, McGruder said he went after BET because network executives, in his view, failed to elevate the network’s standards — something Hudlin had pointedly promised to do when joining the network three years ago.
“I was looking for changes and improvements, and I didn’t see any,” McGruder said on the DVD. “I didn’t see them. So I said, OK, it’s fair game. It’s hard not to address it. It really was an important part of the strip.” Because of legal reasons, he adds, he cannot mention the real names of the people satirized in the episodes.
Barnes added: “You expect white television to present black people in a particular way. The anger comes from black television portraying us in a particular way. That brings out a different sense of frustration, and at the heart of these episodes is that frustration.”
by David Brooks
In 1950, Dr. Seuss published a book called “If I Ran the Zoo,” which contained the sentence, “I’ll sail to Ka-Troo, and bring back an IT-KUTCH, a PREEP, and a PROO, a NERKLE, a NERD, and a SEERSUCKER, too!” According to the psychologist David Anderegg, that’s believed to be the first printed use of the word “nerd” in modern English.
The next year, Newsweek noticed that nerd was being used in Detroit as a substitute for “square.” But, as Anderegg writes in his book, “Nerds,” the term didn’t really blossom onto mass consciousness until The Fonz used it in “Happy Days,” in the mid- to late-’70s . And thus began what you might call the ascent of nerdism in modern America.
At first, a nerd was a geek with better grades. The word described a high-school or college outcast who was persecuted by the jocks, preps, frat boys and sorority sisters. Nerds had their own heroes (Stan Lee of comic book fame), their own vocations (Dungeons & Dragons), their own religion (supplied by George Lucas and “Star Wars”) and their own skill sets (tech support). But even as “Revenge of the Nerds” was gracing the nation’s movie screens, a different version of nerd-dom was percolating through popular culture. Elvis Costello and The Talking Heads’ David Byrne popularized a cool geek style that’s led to Moby, Weezer, Vampire Weekend and even self-styled “nerdcore” rock and geeksta rappers.
The future historians of the nerd ascendancy will likely note that the great empowerment phase began in the 1980s with the rise of Microsoft and the digital economy. Nerds began making large amounts of money and acquired economic credibility, the seedbed of social prestige. The information revolution produced a parade of highly confident nerd moguls – Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Larry Page and Sergey Brin and so on.
Among adults, the words “geek” and “nerd” exchanged status positions. A nerd was still socially tainted, but geekdom acquired its own cool counterculture. A geek possessed a certain passion for specialized knowledge, but also a high degree of cultural awareness and poise that a nerd lacked.
Geeks not only rebelled against jocks, but they distinguished themselves from alienated and self-pitying outsiders who wept with recognition when they read “Catcher in the Rye.” If Holden Caulfield was the sensitive loner from the age of nerd oppression, then Harry Potter was the magical leader in the age of geek empowerment.

Do you care about America and the future of the world?
If you do, wake up. Start paying attention to the fact that there’s a real world out there, and that strange things are happening in it. While the U.S. military is being battered to the point of nearly breaking in Iraq (where we are bogged down now over a war for oil that we can do well enough without — McCain just admitted this week end that we are there for the oil), CHINA IS PREPARING FOR A NUCLEAR WAR. Wake up and smell the coffee you people.
China views us as an obstacle to world domination, as do the Islamic fundamentalists. (Too bad they can’t fight it out between them, but that would only happen once we were toast.) While we are fighting in the deserts of Iraq and our army is being stretched to the breaking point, China is arming for war.
McCain gave a speech recently in which he stated that China and Russia should be excluded from the G8 and isolated from the rest of the world. All that does is prove once again how isolated and insular the Republican Party is and how little they know about the world they want to play bully in. While the U.S. and Europe are preoccupied with oil in Iraq that we will never control anyway, China has been assembling a navy to rival any navy on Earth, and now has many nuclear subs which are completely untrackable by any technology the West has as of the present time. Time to wake up, people.
I would like to hear from people with a working brain who can see what is happening. I think we should be writing about this and contacting our Senators and Congressmen. Do you care enough about America and your own futures to read the articles I’ve listed here and respond?
Your own futures could well depend on the actions of China and Russia but particularly China. READ THE NEW FROM ASIA. This will undoubtedly be the Pacific Century but it would be nice if we were still here as a thriving country, not heaps of slag and decomposing bodies.
To presume as truth that which is speculative in nature is, to be frank, irresponsible. The links you posted to support your “theory stated as fact” rely heavily on interpretation and paranoia. What does China owe to the rest of the world – especially to the United States, in terms of transparency, when the U.S. Administration feels free to do what they please when they please. As leaders of the free world, isn’t this the example we set?
You incorrectly stated that nuclear war would effectively destroy anything “beautiful” anywhere. Japan was nuked twice. Nukes have been tested since then around the globe. Wouldn’t a superior strategy effect the same end as in WWII? While millions suffered the hell of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Americans still went to baseball games, picnics, and movies. Apple pies still found themselves in kitchen windows to cool off, and daydreamers still sat in lush fields chewing on a stem of wheat while basking in the sun. Beauty (which is in the eye of the beholder) was abundant in some areas of the globe, even while Jews were being incinerated in Germany, the Japanese massacred Chinese in Nanking, or millions starved in Russia under Stalin.
You may be correct in guessing that China is planning a nuclear war, or you could be 100% deluded. Time will tell. Whatever the case may be – war, the symptom of a deeper root, is not the answer. Shall America repeat its policy of pre-emptive engagement the way we did in Iraq and Afghanistan and are now pushing for Iran – under false pretenses?
If you really want to deter the threat of nuclear war, stop talking it up, don’t get a gun, get some understanding, take some lessons in conversation, and pick up the phone.
The Chinese have economic interests in the United States which far surpass any justification for nuclear engagement. Knowing the U.S. to have acted as international bullies (if not terrorists) I would suppose that China is merely getting its side of the board together in case the U.S. Administration decides to do anything foolish. History has discovered many non-violent ways to accomplishing national, political, and economic interests. I am sure China hasn’t missed those lessons.

One of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most prominent black supporters said Sunday he was insulted by the characterization by rival Barack Obama’s presidential campaign of her remarks about the civil rights movement.
Bob Johnson, the nation’s first black billionaire and founder of the BET cable television network, said Obama’s campaign had acted dishonestly and had distorted Clinton’s remarks about Martin Luther King Jr.
Johnson also seemed to hint at Obama’s acknowledged youthful drug use, an issue that led another Clinton campaign official to resign. Johnson later denied that was the case.
Clinton was quoted just before the New Hampshire primary as saying King’s dream of racial equality was realized only when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Some black leaders have criticized that remark as suggesting Johnson deserved more credit than the slain civil rights leader for the passage and enactment of major civil rights legislation.
While introducing Clinton at Columbia College on Sunday, Johnson criticized Obama’s camp.
“That kind of campaign behavior would not be reasonable with me for a guy who says ‘I want to be a reasonable, likable, Sidney Poitier,'” said Johnson, owner of the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. He commented after Clinton said in a televised interview Sunday that she hoped the campaign would not be about race.
Johnson also said Obama’s own record should give voters pause.
“To me, as an African American, I am frankly insulted the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues — when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood; I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in his book — when they have been involved,” Johnson said.
Obama wrote about his teenage drug use — marijuana, alcohol and sometimes cocaine — in his memoir, “Dreams from My Father.”
Johnson later said his comments referred to Obama’s work as a community organizer in Chicago “and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect,” he said in a statement released by Clinton’s campaign.
Obama, campaigning in Las Vegas, declined to respond.
“I’m not going to spend all my time running down the other candidates, which seems to be what Senator Clinton has been obsessed with for the last month,” Obama said.
His strategist, however, didn’t spare Johnson or Clinton.
“I don’t see why this is so much different from what Billy Shaheen did in New Hampshire. Senator Clinton apologized for that. It’s bewildering why, since she was standing there, she had nothing to say about this,” David Axelrod said.
Last month, top Hillary Clinton adviser Bill Shaheen resigned from the campaign after suggesting Democrats should be wary of nominating Obama because his past drug use could be used against him in the campaign.
Obama supporter “I.S.” Leevy Johnson, a former South Carolina state legislator, said it was “offensive” that Clinton stood by during Johnson’s “personal, divisive attack on Barack Obama.”
“For someone who decries the politics of personal destruction, she should’ve immediately denounced these attacks on the spot,” Johnson said in a statement issued by Obama’s campaign.
Clinton was not yet on stage when Bob Johnson made his statements.

What are the white supremacists doing now? They are doing four basic things. Racial showcasing, racial population tailoring, racial dislocation, and white sacrificing; and these four things are designed to produce maximum sophisticated confusion among the victims, and so far has been somewhat successful worldwide.
Now, start with the first one. What is racial showcasing? That means taking huge numbers of black people and putting them out front. There’s gonna be more of this, all over the planet. Many, many millions of black people that you will see will be rolling in money. They will be able to showcase the places where they live. They will be able to showcase their knowledge and expertise. See, you have television now, you have all of the mediums for doing this, for showcasing. Huge numbers, of black people, I would say it will eventually run into the millions. So many that you wont be able to count them.
Now, what is this for? This is for what? Any black person who starts talking about racism in the future is gonna be laughed at, because they are gonna be able to showcase so many black people who are what you call quote unquote successful, that it will seem that racism has been put out of business. But white supremacy is a world business, and like any other business it works on profits and losses, which means percentages. You go into business you expect a certain amount of loss. If you are in the grocery business, well you might have a load of asparagus that is foul, but overall you will make more profits than you have losses if you gonna stay in the business.
So the white supremacists know that the cost of doing the business of white supremacy is going up. They can no longer get away with Joe Luis and Nina Horn, like they did years ago. They have to have many, many, many more black people who are going to be showcased, or made up to stir, just to explain that you have to make up terms, because they won’t make them up for you.
So now that’s the first phase, or one of the first elements in the maximum confusion। And so that black people won’t be able to say they’ll say well, you know, there must be something wrong with me that I am down and out and don’t have a biscuit to eat, because there are so many millions of black people who have so much, so it can’t be race. But see, for the four or five million black people who will be showcased there will be hundreds of millions worldwide, who won’t have a biscuit. That’s the way the business operates, in the future it will be. That’s the way it seems to be going according to the evidence, according to the logic.
Racial Population Tailoring
The other is racial population tailoring. That’s number two. Meaning they are gonna be killing huge numbers, either directly or indirectly, of non white people, I say black people I mean, you know, non white. Anybody who is in the non white category. And doing this on an ongoing basis, not to try and kill them all, because when you are in the business of racism you don’t kill all of the things that you need in order to keep racism going. You are ego-tripping, which is what it really is all about. But you do tailor the population so you can keep the control. So you will kill off a few million in the Congo, then you, a few years up the road you will kill off a few million in Nigeria, and a few years up the road you will kill off a few in Mexico, and on and on and on. And you will highly select places where you do this, you will have it all computerised. Where you kill off huge numbers, or you have them, even better still, kill off each other, like you do in most of the cities in the north-western part of the world, the north-western hemisphere, having black people gun down each other, you know, non-white people the brown people gunning down each other, gangs and all that other foolishness, you see. and you kill them off, you know, and you just keep this going, you hanging on, and you put things in place that will see to it that this keeps going that way, it never stops, because that’s the mentality of the people. This is racial population tailoring.
In other places where people are reasonably sane, they don’t have the tendency to kill off each other, then you do things like drive the water, or poison the rivers, dump toxic waste… there’s all kinds of ways to do that racial population tailoring.
Then the other, number three is racial dislocation. Keep em movin. People who are forever on the move, through imminent domain, urbanization, urban renewal, gentrification, are hemmed in, drying up the river, to the other dam 800 miles up. And the river seals off the water, behind the dam, I mean the river is sealed off behind the dam. So that means that all the people down in the valley there they don’t get any water. They need water. They depend on the fishing industry. So now they have to come and work for you, because there is no more water there, no more fish. And you give them minimum wage, and a promise for the future as long as they look up to you. So they are completely dependent. But keep them moving. If a black person in the north-western hemisphere starts getting that second generation house, then you come through and say you gotta build a highway. That’s the technique.
And these are things that you are asked about how the white supremacists operate. These are the ways that they operate.
The white sacrificing is the fourth. And this is, here again, all four of these things offer maximum sophisticated confusion among the victims, so you and I are confused. You are keeping your victims confused. So you have white sacrifices, meaning it’s kind of parallel to the racial showcasing. But these people in this case are white. Like in any army, or any military operation you know you gonna have some losses. So some white people are written off, under the system of white supremacy. And a lot of white people are aware of this. they don’t like it. But they are told that this is the cost of doing business, just like a person who goes into the army and knows full well you might be killed. But it goes with the territory of trying to defend your bigger operation. So white sacrifices means you have more and more white people on park benches, more and more white people begging on the streets. They will be greatly visible, but what you won’t pay attention to because black people never pay much attention to what white people are doing we just watch each other, see they know that, you will be passing millions of white people who are doing well on any city street, and for the handful of white people who have fallen through the crutch, you might say, sitting in front of the subways, or begging in front of these delicatessen, from the handful that you will see doing this, up under the bridge and all like that, it will give the illusion that it is not about race, that white supremacy is officially out of business, so there will be more of these white sacrifices. They will be greatly visible. But compared to the number of white people who will be prospering, it will be very negligible worldwide.
Now those are the four maximum sophisticated confusion elements.
In the book, The United Independent Compensatory Code/System, Dr. Neely Fuller, Jr. writes, “If you do not understand White Supremacy (Racism), what it is, and how it works, everything else that you understand, will only confuse you.”
“White Supremacy just means a system set up by white people who believe that the entire universe should be dominated by people who are classified as white and that all the activities of the people they classify as non-white will be subject to them and farmed by them for their satisfaction in all the areas of activity – economic, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war – forever. That’s what White Supremacy is. It’s the most powerful political concept ever thought up. No tribal concept has ever been as powerful as that idea. That you can go all over the universe and just on one criterion alone, regardless of language, regardless of anything, and just say, “If you are a non-white person, you come under my thumb automatically.” Just on that alone! Doesn’t make any difference what your aspirations are, or how long you have been around, or how much land you have occupied, or how long you have been in that particular place, whether you are a person on the mountain top or a person in the valley, or a person by a river – “If you are not white, as I am white, I will always, forever, tell you what to do to my satisfaction.” That is what white supremacy means. And as long as Black people have been subject to it, they have not understood that concept at all. You say Black, you’re talking about all people of all… tan is black, yellow is black, the only so-called color is really a non-color and that is white, in a political sense. That’s why they call the non-white people colored people and/or people of color. So in a way of speaking you can say that white people are a people who are colorless: having less color or no color. So you have to say, in a way of speaking, that white is not a color. But this is the type of nonsense that the white supremacist dreamed up when they set up their system. And it causes confusion among the victims, but it doesn’t cause confusion among them. Because they make it whatever they want to make it. That’s the magic… or the science of being a white supremacist. You can make things whatever you want to make it as you go along.” – Neely Fuller

“I knew from an early age that film was a medium I wanted to work in. Through my films I’ve found a way of expressing myself as well as telling the stories that are important to me. At sixteen, I directed my first documentary, A Girl Like Me. Before that, I created numerous short films and attended the New York Film Academy.
I would love to pursue a career in filmmaking as well as to explore my passions for acting and writing. I have a love of traveling, which affords me the opportunity to meet new people and explore other cultures.
My goal is to develop more projects that will help my community and give a much needed voice to issues that pertain to people of color. I am currently attending Urban Academy, a NYC public high school, and I live with my mother in Manhattan’s Upper West Side.”
More about Kiri here.
I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our lord, one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First , I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the of the colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me in my modest plantation in the West Indies where I have experimented with some of the newest and still the oldest method for control of slaves. Ancient Rome would envy us if my program is implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious KING JAMES, whose BIBLE we CHERISH, I saw enough to know that our problem is not unique. While Rome used cords or wood as crosses for standing human bodies along the old highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasion.
I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree a couple of miles back. You are losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed, Gentleman,…You know what your problems are; I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them.
In my bag, I have a fool proof method for controlling your slaves. I guarantee everyone of you that if installed it will control the slaves for at least three hundred years. My method is simple, any member of your family or any OVERSEER can use it.
I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves, and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use FEAR, DISTRUST, and ENVY for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies, and it will work throughout the SOUTH. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On the top of my list is “AGE” but it is only there because it starts with an “A”; The second is”COLOR” or shade; there is INTELLIGENCE, SIZE, SEX, SIZE OF PLANTATION, ATTITUDE of owner, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, east or west, north, south, have fine or coarse hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences, I shall give you an outline of action- but before that, I shall assure you that DISTRUST IS STRONGER THAN TRUST, AND ENVY IS STRONGER THAN ADULATION, RESPECT OR ADMIRATION.
The black slave, after receiving this indoctrination, shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.
Don’t forget you must pitch the old black VS. the young black males, and the young black male against the old black male. You must use the dark skinned slaves VS. the light skin slaves. You must use the female VS the male, and the male VS, the female. You must always have your servants and OVERSEERS distrust all blacks, but it is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us.
Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control, use them. Never miss an opportunity. My plan is guaranteed, and the good thing about this plan is that if used intensely for one year the slave will remain perpetually distrustful.
